The Carmen Powers Legacy Lecture Series
Inspired by Randy Pauschís "The Last Lecture," the Carmen Powers Legacy Lecture Series, in memorium Professor Carmen Powers, is a new platform to simultaneously honor retirees and enable the college to benefit from the experiences of our most accomplished faculty and staff. These lectures will be videotaped and become part of our permanent institutional history. As such, they are meant to provide the most respected members of the MCC community an opportunity to leave a meaningful, lasting message to inspire those still pursuing professional and academic journeys at the college.

Carmen Powers Legacy Lecture, 2017: Featuring Diane Shoger.
Diane Shoger is the Executive Director of the Monroe Community College (MCC) Foundation in Rochester, New York. Ms. Shoger joined the MCC Foundation as Director of Development and Major Gifts in 1999 overseeing two capital campaigns that raised over $19 million and secured eight gifts of $1 million or more. She was promoted to Executive Director in 2008, and now manages a comprehensive and nationally recognized development program including annual and alumni giving, special events, planned giving and major gifts, which annually raises $5-6 million. Ms. Shoger was honored in 2013 by being named both the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District IIís Professional of the Year and the Association of Fundraising Professionals Genesee Valley Regionís Robert A. Clinger Outstanding Professional of the Year. In 2015, she received the CASE Commonfund Institutionally Related Foundation Award. Ms. Shoger is currently a finalist for the prestigious Athena Award, presented annually to a leading businesswoman in the Greater Rochester area.
Ms. Shoger has over thirty yearsí experience at the senior management level and extensive experience in nonprofit management, including volunteer and board management, programming and implementation of successful donor cultivation, solicitation and fundraising events. Ms. Shoger received a M.S. degree in Educational Administration Foundations and a B.S. in Special Education from Illinois State University. Prior to joining the MCC Foundation, her expertise and skills were honed with the Special Olympics organization, first as Vice President of Program and then as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the New York Chapter.

What Would Carmen Say Now?
Lynn Bartholome has won every major teaching award at Monroe Community College, including the NISOD Award (now MEEA) in 2002, the Dr. Wesley T. Hanson Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2006, and SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2004.
During her 18 years of service at MCC, Lynn has taught courses in literature, writing, popular culture, and philosophy, and has served as the president of the Popular Culture Association. Lynn has been a prolific writer of books and articles on popular culture and has served on the editorial advisory board of The Journal of Popular Culture.
15 Things I've Learned While Working at MCC
Michael Goho has been a respected professor in the Engineering Science and Physics Department since 1985. He began teaching at Monroe Community College shortly after completing his PhD in Physics at the University of Florida.
Although recognized as inspirational teacher, Michael is, perhaps, best known for his work with the Faculty Association. Michael served as President of the Faculty Association from 1997-2005. Since then, he has continued to be active in the union as the Chief Contract Negotiator and as Teaching Director on the Faculty Council.
Michael will be the first Legacy Lecture speaker to be introduced by his/her spouse, Marlene Goho, who gave the 2015 Carmen Powers Legacy Lecture!

From Mad Men to Unionism
Marlene began her career at MCC in the Registration office in 1972. In 1978, after six years with the college, she transitioned to a position with the Faculty Association. For thirty-seven years, Marlene has devoted her work to supporting the union and to improving the working conditions of our members. Over that time, Marlene has played a key role in helping the Faculty Association expand its role as bargaining agent for the faculty and professional staff of the college, and she is responsible for many of the day-to-day functions that keep the Faculty Association running smoothly. She serves as an essential resource for hundreds of faculty and staff members who come to the FA office with questions or concerns, and has personally had a positive impact on the working lives of countless MCC employees. Marlene's knowledge of the history of the Faculty Association, labor-management relations, and the contract are unparalleled.

Reflections of a Community College Executive
Pete Oteroís career at MCC began in 1981. During his time here Pete served as dean of students, assistant dean of admissions, director of admissions, and most recently as the Executive Dean of the Damon City Campus. In addition to his work at MCC, Pete served as chairperson of the Rochester City School District's Hispanic Studies Steering Committee, as a scoutmaster for a Latino Boy Scout troop, and as a member of the Rochester City School District's Blue Ribbon Task Force (assessing the districtís financial practices). Pete previously hosted and produced the WROC-TV 8 public affairs program, Revista, which addressed Latino affairs in Rochester.

Chris Belle-Isle came to MCC as a student in 1964. He began working for MCC in 1975 as the collegeís first alumni director. An adjunct for the past ten years in the Business and Economics Department, Chris is best known for his lengthy tenure as Director of the Career and Transfer Center, where he helped countless students attain their educational goals, obtain employment, and begin their careers. Chris is retiring after serving as interim vice-president for student services.

Richard (Dick) Ryther (left) has been at MCC for 18 years, beginning as director of the Campus Center, but most notably as the assistant and then associate vice president of student services; he is retiring in August, 2013, after serving as the interim vice president for student services. Raymond (Ray) Shea (right) has been at MCC for 25 years, spending the first 20 as a professor in the Business Administration and Economics Department, then serving MCC as a special assistant to the president. Ray is a recipient of the SUNY Chancellorís Award for Excellence in Teaching (2001), and is a published author. Ray has just retired from his position as assistant vice president for institutional planning, effectiveness, and accountability.

Professor Terrill Tugel joined the Biology Department at MCC in 1987 after graduating from Drury College in Missouri and completing a Master of Arts in Biology from SUNY Geneseo. An outstanding teacher, Terriís work in the classroom has been simultaneously rigorous and supportive of student learning. In addition to teaching a wide array of courses in the department, Terri quickly became a vital contributor to the college. She advised the Biology Club, mentored countless faculty, and chaired departmental and college-wide committees.
Terri Tugel is probably best known for her work with and leadership of the Faculty Senate. After serving as a senator, member of the Executive Committee, chair of the Curriculum Committee, and Faculty Senate secretary, Terri led the Senate as its President from 2005-2009. Subsequently, she was granted a Leave for Professional Advancement for the Benefit of the College to digitize decades of Faculty Senate files. Her years of service and leadership of the Senate uniquely qualified her to assess its history and organize it in such a way as to benefit future senates, faculty, and administrators.

Inaugural Lecture, 2011: Professors Bonnie Connell and James Petrosino were the honorees at the inaugural of the new Legacy Lecture Series. They retired in 2011 after decades of service and dedication to the College, the community it serves, and the values it represents. Bonnie Connell: Bonnie earned a Masters Degree in Education-Secondary Mathematics from SUNY Brockport. She taught at Eastridge High School, Greece Athena Middle School, and Webster Schroeder High School before coming to MCC in January 1982 as an adjunct. She obtained a full-time tenure-track position in September, 1987. Bonnie received the SUNY Chancellorís Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2007. She has been the adjunct coordinator for the Mathematics Department since the fall of 1999. Bonnie has served as chair or co-chair of many important College committees, including the Strategic Planning Team (2007), Presidential Search Committee (2009), and the Provost/Vice President of Academic Services search (2010). She is married to Frank Connell and has three children, Dan, Deana Olles, and Courtney, and a recent grandson, Drew Olles. Bonnie enjoys walking her Basset Hound, crocheting, reading, watching the Yankees, and spending time with her family.
Jim Petrosino: Jim earned a Masters Degree in Education from SUNY Brockport, and a Certificate of Advance Study in Educational Administration from SUNY Brockport. He taught at Honeoye Central School before joining the business faculty at MCC in 1980. In 1991 he received the SUNY Chancellorís Award for Excellence in Teaching, in 1992 and 1993 he received the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Teaching Excellence Award, in 2001 the Writing Across the Curriculum Outstanding Faculty Award, and in 2002 he received the Wesley T. Hanson Award for Teaching Excellence. For the past ten years, Jim served as Chair of the Business Administration/Economics Department, and retired in January after 30 years of service to the College. Jim has come out of retirement and is currently serving as Interim Dean of Technical Education. Jim enjoys ballroom and swing dancing with his wife Bonnie, who teaches Nursing here at the College. When he is not on the dance floor, Jim enjoys his grandchildren Alexzander and Victoria, woodworking and general construction projects, his vintage 1950 Pontiac, workouts, traveling, and time with his friends and family.
