PSY 101 Study Guide


This is your official course information (syllabus) for PSY 101. This applies to all sections and all faculty (except the honors section).

Please note that by taking this course you are agreeing to the rules described on these pages and we expect that you will familiarize yourself with them. Feel free to ask your instructor about anything you are unsure of pertaining to this syllabus.

Course Description (MCC catalog):

An introductory survey of the scientific study of human behavior and cognitive functions, including developmental psychology, neuroscience, learning, personality, memory, perception, psychopathology, and social behavior. Emphasis is on understanding psychological concepts, the integration and application of psychology to real life, and theoretical and methodological issues in scientific psychology. Opportunities for studying, tutoring, and supplemental testing will be made available to students outside of class time in the Psychology Learning Center.

Course Learning Outcomes:

  • Differentiate between the numerous areas of specialization within the broader field of psychology.
  • Identify the major research methods used in psychology.
  • Apply the basic principles of scientific thinking to the various subfields of psychology.
  • Identify the important concepts in the various sub-disciplines of psychology (which could include biological, behavioral, clinical, cognitive, developmental, or social psychology).
  • Identify the important theories in the various sub-disciplines of psychology (which could include biological, behavioral, clinical, cognitive, developmental, or social psychology).
  • Identify applications of scientific psychology in real-world situations.

Required Textbook:

MCC Custom Edition of Lilienfeld, Lynn, Namy, & Woolf (2014). Psychology: From Inquiry to Understanding. New York, NY: Pearson Learning Solutions (ISBN: 1323152601 or 9781323425046). The book comes in a loose-leaf format, which reduces the cost but means that it is easy for material to go missing. To access MyPsychLab, which includes practice quizzes, videos, and an audio version of the textbook, you will have to purchase a new textbook. If you search for the book elsewhere, you must use the ISBN number to get the correct item. Used books do not provide MyPsychLab access. Online textbook access through MyPsychLab is available by purchasing online (about $95) by logging into our MyPsychLab website. See the MyPsychLab page for more information.

A print copy of the study guide is also available at the bookstore (for about $2) and is highly recommended.

You will be taking computerized tests, and can access MyLabs through Blackboard. However, you can also access MyLabs from the link on the home page of this web site. Your Blackboard login is the same as your MCC email login; you can also access Blackboard through MyMCC. Once in Blackboard, click on your PSY-101 course and follow instructions there. Attendance policy:

Attendance for PSY 101 is required, and attendance will be recorded. You have much to gain from regular attendance in class. See the attendance policy for details.

Cancellations, closings, and emergencies:

In the event of a campus-wide emergency, please adhere to emergency procedures. If a campus-wide emergency, such as a fire, should occur during an exam, it will be the responsibility of individual instructors to determine whether the exam will continue, be rescheduled, or be cancelled. Academic honesty:

Put very simply, cheating will not be tolerated, and this pertains to cheating in class, in the Psychology Learning Center, or in any manner related to testing and attendance. Our brief academic honesty policy page explains the details.

Electronic devices:

All electronic devices in the classroom or Learning Center, such as cell phones, pagers, laptop computers, etc. must be kept silent. If the device cannot operate silently, it must be turned off or left outside. In addition, such devices are not allowed to be readily accessible, turned on, or used during testing, and all earpieces and headphones must be removed during testing. "During testing" includes any time you are in the testing room of the learning center. Your instructor may impose additional prohibitions.

Recording Class Lecture: Neither audio nor video recordings of the instructor or the class can be made without the explicit prior written permission of the instructor.

Students with special needs:

Students with physical disabilities or learning disabilities, or who speak English as a second language, should contact their instructors immediately to identify needed instructional support. It is our intention to make every effort to have the course material accessible to every student. Dealing with special needs generally requires extra effort on the part of both student and instructor, so it is crucial that you work closely with your instructor from the beginning of the semester. If eligible, you should make arrangements for appropriate accommodations through the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (Room 1-231 at Brighton, or the Student Engagement Center, Room 310, at the Downtown Campus). The office requests validation or confirmation of your disability before accommodations can be made. Typically, on the Brighton campus, students with disabilities can take tests directly in the Psychology Learning Center. On the Downtown Campus, students with disabilities usually take tests in the Student Engagement Center, and will need to make an appointment for each test. Appointments can be made in advance for the entire semester. Translation dictionaries are prohibited during testing.

College-Wide Policies:

Students are required to read and acknowledge College-wide policies each term. They are found in “College-Wide Policies” on Blackboard under Student/Courses.
