Math Competency Exam Information Sheet

Fall 2008

PLEASE REVIEW THIS SHEET CAREFULLY AS THE REQUIREMENTS HAVE CHANGED SINCE LAST SEMESTER

Due to the critical nature of accurate medication dosage calculations in health care, the MCC Department of Nursing has established a requirement that all nursing students show evidence of math dosage calculation competency each semester.

Every student in the nursing program is required to take a mandatory 10 question math competency exam appropriate for their current clinical course. These exams test math/dosage calculation abilities. There will not be any pharmacology or nursing implications content tested. The exams will be very similar to worksheets or assignments you have done in your current course or have done in previous courses.

The math competency exam will be administered during the following weeks:

·         Exam 1 week #9

·         Exam 2 week #12

·         Exam 3 week #14

To meet the Department of Nursing requirement, all students must:

  • Take exam 1 during week #9 at the scheduled times.
    • If a score of 100% is obtained, the student does not need to take exams 2 or 3.

  • If a score of 100% is not achieved on exam 1, the student must take exam 2 during week #12.
    • If a score of 100% is obtained on exam 2, the student does not need to take exam 3.

  • If a score of 100% is not achieved on exam 2, the student must take exam 3 during week #14.

  • If a score of 100% is not achieved on exam 3 and the student has taken all 3 exams, the student has met the math competency math requirements.

If the student fails to meet the above criteria, the student will receive an “Incomplete” for their final clinical grade. A grade that is incomplete will not allow the student to progress to the next clinical course.

The dates, times, and locations of  the week # 9 math competency exams are all located on the reverse side of this hand-out. Remember, this exam is mandatory during week

# 9, so please schedule a time to come to campus during that week to take the exam. If you have any questions, speak with the faculty of your team.

To ensure student success, you MUST arrive at the exam location at least 45 minutes before the end of the exam or you will not be allowed entry into the exam. This will give each student ample time to complete the exam
