This is a Quicktime movie . In it, Tom C., a DCC student, describes his experience with a SPT 141 and TRS 105 Learning Community. If you need Quicktime to view this video, a free download ( For Windows and Mac ) is available at: www.apple.com/quicktime

Tom C.: Student Tom C. discusses his experience with a learning community: The best experience I had was probably the students. The students made the class number one! If it wasn't for the students, having them in both of my classes, I don't know what I would have done because I got used to all of them. I would talk to them like they were my family pretty much. and tell them and they would understand and laugh at my jokes and everything else.

This is a Quicktime movie in which Eric W. describes his experience in the CRJ 101 and TRS 105 Learning Community.

Eric W.: Eric W. said, " My biggest concerns were what am I going to do after high school? Do I really want to go to college because honestly, I didn't. After I got to MCC, I found that I was really happy that I went to college. I love MCC, and I'm not going to stop here. I'm going to keep on going and just try to do my best.

MarkL: It helped me learn both by integrating what I learned in English into my intorduction class to criminal justice. So when you go through and you are learning how to make complex sentences and everything else and how to do it correctly, then when you get an assignment in Criminal Justice when you submit your paper, you can kind of apply everything you have learned in English directly to another subject, and that kind of gives you a hands on experience.

In this Quicktime movie, Todd P. discusses his experience in the ENG 101 and SOC 101 Learning Community.

Todd P.: Well, I'm a returning adult student, and so speaking to that, I think you know there was a hesitancy - am I ready to go back to school, what's it going to be like? And so the Learning Community was a very comfortable fit. I think it was a more relaxed environment , possibly a little more informal which allowed me to relax and concentrate on the learning and not worry so much about grades or homework because again by the professors working together, they scheduled out the homework assignments so it wasn't like we're getting everything at one time. They staggered the assignments, so there was flexibility there even between the teachers and the students. For new students just coming to college, it's a great opportunity to get your feet wet with school and a good first step inti getting into college and introducing yourself to the college environment.

In this Quicktime movie, Evan D. discusses his experience with writing assignments in the TRS 105 and CRJ 101 Learning Community.

http://web.monroecc.edu/manila/webfiles/mnolan/EDulnikweb.mov

Evan D.: Evan D. said, " I liked it personally a lot because I wasn't a big English fan, and for the fact that to actually have someone go hand in hand with each essay so you know what you are looking for. Not only are you learning how to make better essays, but you are working out for the other class. I thought that was a huge advantage , and it helped me out personally really well. I liked the class because it was more of an informal class, so you could talk to other students and see how they took essays and what was their point of view and also other activities even little ones. Sentence fragments, we would work together to write an essay, and that helps out a lot. You know, just having an informal and informative class like that."

Javon: I am a criminal justice major at Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York. My goal is to become a probation officer. I was in the Learning Community with the law and criminal justice. Writing is very important . You need to know the proper form especially if you are researching a paper , you need to know proper format and how to do that. Being in the Learning Community will show you and teach you that. The writing in criminal justice classes, it can be very challenging . Certain professors require you to do a certain format and being in the learning community with the English and criminal justice classes , they teach you the proper format in writing these papers , researching these papers . You need to know your English. You need to know proper formatting and writing , and being in the Learning Community taught me that.

In this video clip, Javon tells about her time in the CRJ and TRS Learning Community.
