Mathematics Study Skills Checklist
The following checklist will help you know that you are doing the right things to optimize your chances of success in your Mathematics course, whether that course is on–campus, online, or hybrid. Click here for a more thorough questionnaire.
Outside Class
___ I study at least 2 hours outside class for each hour spent in class.
I do the homework, as follows:
___ I start working on the homework as soon as it is assigned, so that I can get help if needed before the homework is due.
___ I first review my notes and read the text section.
___ Then, I try each assigned problem, working on my own.
___ For the problems I can complete, I check the answers in the back of the book to make sure that my answers are correct. I redo any problems that have incorrect answers.
If I get stuck on a problem, I get help from the following, and keep working until I understand the problem:
___ The Student Study Guide or Solutions Manual (my copy or in the Robert A. Fratangelo Mathematics Learning Center, room 11-204)
___ My instructor during office hours
___ Tutors (when available) in the Robert A. Fratangelo Mathematics Learning Center (Room 11-204)
___ Fellow classmates
___ In addition to homework, I study for tests by reviewing my notes and (most importantly) by doing practice problems.
___ I have read the course information sheet to know what is expected.
___ I use the Robert A. Fratangelo Mathematics Learning Center (room 11-204) as a study area when I am on campus.
___ I have the name and phone number of at least one other class member so that I can call to get the assignment if I miss class, or perhaps to help each other when we get stuck.
___ I know my professor's office hours and the location of the office. I don't hesitate to stop and ask questions during office hours.
In class
___ I attend each class, and arrive on time. I do not make appointments or plans that would cause me to miss class.
___ I participate in class activities and take notes when appropriate.
___ If I am easily distracted, I sit toward the front of the class.
___ I pay attention so that I don't miss something important. I don't disrupt class by talking with friends.
