CRC 101 – Practical Computer Literacy

Course Description: This course is designed for persons with no experience using a computer. Focus will be on personal computers (PC) using the Microsoft Windows operating system; but other operating systems will be discussed. Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: execute basic commands for creating, saving, deleting and locating files on a PC, prepare and print documents in Microsoft Word, design and set up a spreadsheet with basic functions and graphs using Microsoft Excel, identify major components of a computer system, operate a computer in a network environment, work with e-mail, use an Internet browser, communicate effectively with computer personnel, and understand and use appropriate terminology, especially as it relates to purchasing and operating a PC. This is a hands-on course. Several major projects will be assigned, to be completed outside of class time. Students are not required to own a computer. Three class hours. Open to any student. Keyboarding skills recommended

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to :

1. Become familiar with the Microsoft Windows interface. (Currently Windows Vista)

2. Create, edit, format and print a document in MS Word.

3. Design and set up a spreadsheet with basic functions and graphs using MS Excel.

4. Identify major hardware and software components of a computer system and relate each to the purchase of a computer.

5. Operate a computer in a network environment

6. Work with e-mail

7. Use an Internet browser

Requirements: The student will be expected to spend time outside of class sessions to work on assignments, perform readings, perform labs and practice the software applications.

Materials & Supplies: One storage media and one pocket folder for submitting Project assignment.

Projects: The student will be required to complete 2 to 3 projects during the course. Projects are to be submitted on a storage media or stored in student storage along with any required printouts. The student is expected to ensure each project is completed and submitted on time. Class time will be provided to work on projects. Any missed project will be graded as a ZERO.

Assignments: The student will be required to complete in class assignments. Any assignment not completed in class is due the next class. Any missed assignment will be graded as a ZERO

Quizzes: There will be 7 in class quizzes during the class. The best 6 quiz scores will be averaged. There are no make-up quizzes. Any missed quiz will be scored as a zero,

100 – 93 A 92 – 90 A-

59 – 0 F

Attendance: Prompt and regular attendance is expected for all classes. Four (4) absences for any reason are considered sufficient for withdrawal for non-attendance.

Responsibilities: It is the student responsibility to attend all classes, complete the assigned readings, and complete projects and assignments.
