Dear Future Blackbirds,

I, Matthew R Corbett have set in place the foundation…now we must build up. This letter shall serve as both a list of ideas, as well as hold a variety of suggested guidelines for our, but more importantly, your future. The future starts now.

Everyone should participate as well as play an essential part in the club. It doesn’t matter whether you are a Blackbird President, Officer, or Member. All should come together and stride towards making the club successful.

Go to the Officer training. That is one of the most important things. If our leaders don’t now how or where to take us, how to do things, how are they leading? Who will follow? Make sure, if you’re a leader; lead. If you’re not a leader...become one.

Get people excited about the club. Talk to other people about Blackbird; whether the person is a member or not. The more we talk about the club, the more word of mouth will spread, thus allowing Blackbird to become a household name in our area.

Meet up with your officers prior to planned meetings. You do this in order to set up an agenda. An agenda can be anything that the leaders want to accomplish at the meeting. It can be anything from business, to fun and games. A well balanced combination of both is always a winning formula.

Control the website. Without proper use of the website, the club could suffer. Believe it or not our club website gets a lot of hits; that come in different ways. Some are members checking things out, but other hits come from future or current MCC Students who are looking into the clubs at MCC. If our leadership keeps the website looking sharp and up to date then the chances of adding more talent to the group increases.

Spread out responsibilities. No one, and I mean no one should, or can do it all themselves. I have personally tried and it isn’t fun. Assign specific jobs to specific individuals for specific times. Use each other, to lean on in good times and bad. Our leadership will always be a reflection on the club. Members come and go, but officers are forever.

Use your authority. Don’t be scarred to tell someone like it is. Stand up and be a leader, especially presidents. Use your knowledge and power, to make what you believe are the correct decisions, in order to take the club in the appropriate direction.

Officers should make friends with our colleagues and leaders in the campus center. They do a great job trying to help students and clubs. If we are on their good side they can make our planning of events and activities a breeze. But if you anger them, or do something without following the correct steps, they can make your process very difficult. Do things the correct way. You should have learned it in training.

Be creative. This should be the most creative and influential club on campus. We should have hundreds of people interested and coming regularly to our meetings. Keep your goals and ambitions for the club high. Believe that you can do anything within the realms of possibility.

Be seen. If our club isn’t scene around campus, then who is going to know about us? How will they know of events that we have on the horizon? It is super important to advertise Blackbird Entertainment.

Plan events for the upcoming year, the previous year (or semester). It is difficult, for a theatre club in particular, to plan an event at the last minute. We must assume that we are speaking of productions; it is nearly impossible to book the Black Box or the Main Stage at the last minute. Even a few months in advance it has, in the past, proven difficult. So plan events now if you want to get something going for the next semester.

Blackbird Ideas:

-Monologue Competitions

-Simple Fun, and Games

-Improvising

-Have Jim Simmonds (or the director of theatre) organize a learning session

-A 24 hour play project (Write, cast, rehearse, and perform a play over the course of 24 hours

-A short, 10 play (10 minute play) festival

-Consider doing activities or partnering with The Sixth Act

-Drama On Demand - bring theatre to classrooms

-Blackbird student productions can always happen. Follow the rules and make it happen

-Fundraising - Find a way to make money. We are theatre, charge admission to see student shows

-Teach warm up activities, stretching, and breathing methods

Fun and Serious Goals:

-Have a project on the main stage

-Black Box name changed to Black Bird Theatre

-Get a lot of student participation

-Be a part of the creation of the theatre program here at MCC

-Have an annual thing that Blackbird Entertainment does every single year. That way, members of the MCC community will walk the halls and say: "when’s that Blackbird play thing this year?"

-Make Blackbird known in the Rochester community

-Build relationships with other colleges and local theatres, such as Geva

-Try to accommodate everyone, from beginners to veterans. It shouldn’t matter how much theatre experience a member has; they should be able to feel like they are a welcome and valuable, involved club member

I think with these guidelines and ideas, Blackbird Entertainment can grow. It’s up to the leadership to apply them and to do work. The club will only be as good as we make it. So make it great! Tradition is not letting down those who came before you. So please don’t ruin what others have built. Make it expand into something very special. I give my best wishes to all future Blackbirds! Enjoy theatre, be creative, and have fun. I’m sure that I will continue to check in on the club in the future. Until then…make Blackbird Fly.

Yours Truly,

Matthew R Corbett
