Mission Statement
Beyond The Formula is an
annual two-day, summer conference designed to promote excellence in
teaching introductory statistics. Whether participants come from the
high school, two-year or four-year college setting, they can expect to hear
speakers who will provide them with new ideas and techniques that will
make their classrooms more effective statistics learning centers. They
can expect to learn about up-to-date technology that will open up new
possibilities for visual demonstrations of statistical topics to
enhance understanding. They can expect to come away with concrete
illustrations of statistics applications from actual real world
situations. It is our belief that there is more to statistics than a
collection of formulas and data-analyzing procedures. When students
learn statistics, they are learning a new way of looking at life that
will enable them to better understand the world around them. With this
increased understanding they will make better decisions about their
personal lives, their vocations and the challenges of the society in
which they live.
In organizing our conference for the teacher of introductory statistics we have identified four major areas of teaching concern:
- the curriculum that determines the topics of statistics we teach,
- the techniques and methodologies that determine the way in which we teach,
- the ever-changing technology that supports and expands what and how we teach,
- the real world applications that validate the statistics we do teach.
Each year the conference focuses on one or two of these topic areas
and a single emphasis is chosen to serve as a common thread to draw
together all the presentations. At the same time, with 20 to 25 large
group, small group and workshop sessions, all of the four topic areas
find their way onto the agenda in some format at each conference.
Come with us this summer on a trip Beyond The Formula to see how
exciting, thought provoking and inspiring the teaching of statistics
can really be.
