Required Text
None! However, bring your textbook to lab. Worksheets will be handed out on a weekly basis. You should keep lab reports neatly in a binder, as many labs will build on each other from week to week. Bring this binder (and all previous labs) to every lab!
Course Objectives and Policies
This laboratory will explore earth materials identification (rocks and minerals) and the geologic interpretation of maps and surface processes. Students will gain hands-on experiences using the scientific method while strengthening their observational and analytical skills. The laboratory will supplement material discussed in the lecture portion of the course and give students a ‘bigger picture’ view of local geology during two in-class mandatory field trips to the Rochester Gorge and Mendon Ponds Park (tentatively Sept. 30th and Oct. 7th). The class will depart from 11-309 at 9:35 am and take mini vans provided by the college, NO EXCEPTIONS. If you are interested in driving one of these mini vans and have 2 or fewer points on your driver’s license, contact your instructor. Submitting homework via email will result in a 10% reduction in grade.
Attendance Policy
Attendance is vital, since lab only meets once a week. If you do miss a lab, please plan to make it up PRIOR to the next class. If you do not contact me for a make-up, you will lose all points awarded for the exercise. Missing more than one class may result in a withdrawal from the course. Students should also avoid being disruptive to others by turning off cell phones prior to class. Points may be deducted for tardiness (1 point for every 10 minutes late) or cell phone disruptions (2 points per phone call).
Grading
The best way to earn good grades is to actively listen and care about the material being discussed in class. You will earn 10 points for attending each lab, except for field trips, which are 20 points. Lab quizzes, exercises, and exams will total approximately 250 points, which will be applied to points earned in GEO 101 lecture. You will not receive a separate grade for lab; however, you cannot pass the course if you do not attend lab. Lab exercises will either be graded in-class or handed in; please make sure that you listen for instructions! If you miss a lab exam and do not contact me within 48 hours, you are ineligible to take the exam.
