Student Senate

The Brighton Campus Student Senate is composed of 14 members elected during the Spring semester by the students.  Any vacant positions are filled by appointment by a two-thirds vote of the Student Senate. 

 

The Student Senate is the highest authority of the Brighton Student Government and shall take any action deemed necessary to meet the objectives of the Student Government and to carry out the Student Government Constitution and By-Laws.

 

To carry out their powers, the Student Senate conducts formal meetings every Tuesday during the Fall and Spring semesters at 2:15 PM.  They are responsible for establishing and recognizing all activities of the student body under the rules and regulations set forth by the College and the Senate.

 

Weekly commitments of approximately ten (10) hours of work will be required.

 

The requirements for holding a Student Senate position are:

1. Must maintain a 2.25 cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) throughout the course of their term.

2. Must take six (6) credits at the Brighton Campus throughout the course of their term.

3. Enroll in the LDS-181 leadership development course.

4. Hold a minimum of one office hour weekly to handle student, faculty, staff, or administration concerns.

5. Must serve as an advocate for students and their issues with faculty, staff, and administration.

6. Must serve the full length of their term.

7. Must attend all Student Senate meetings, Tuesdays 2:15 PM - 5:15 PM

8. Must attend all Pre-agenda Senate meetings, Fridays 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

 

The Student Senators are:

Academic Clubs Senator

The Academic Clubs Senator must attend Roundtable meetings and is responsible for the various academic clubs chartered on campus.  This Senator assists these clubs in matters pertaining to them and, when necessary, brings these issues to the attention of the full Student Senate.  This Senator must also inform the Student Senate of all events and programs being put on by the academic clubs.

Athletics Senator

The Athletic Senator is responsible for ensuring that the Athletic Department is involved in and informed about Student Senate meetings.  This Senator also assists the Athletic Department in recruiting for athletic teams and encouraging attendance at athletic events.  This Senator assists the Athletic Department and teams with concerns pertaining to them and, when necessary, bring these issues to the attention of the full Student Senate.  This Senator must also inform the Student Senate of all events and programs put on by the Athletic Department as well as inform the Student Senate of upcoming sporting matches and results.

 

At-Large Senators (3) 

 

The At-Large Senator is responsible for all students on campus, making sure that student needs are met and that the overall campus environment is satisfactory for academics, athletics, services, etc.  They serve as a primary advocate to faculty, staff, and administration regarding all general student concerns and issues.  When necessary, this Senator brings these issues to the attention of the full Student Senate.  This Senator must also inform the Student Senate of all general events and programs occurring at the Brighton Campus.

 

Business, Health, and Science Senator

 

The Business, Health, and Science Senator is responsible for making sure that the Business, Health, and Science students are involved in and informed about Student Senate meetings and other events of the Student Government.  This Senator also assists these students in concerns pertaining to them and, when necessary, brings these issues to the attention of the full Student Senate. This Senator must also inform the Student Senate of all events and programs put on by the Business, Health, and Science students and respective departments.

 

Campus Activities Board (CAB) Senator

 

The CAB Senator must attend all Campus Activities Board meetings.  This Senator assists the CAB in concerns pertaining to it and, when necessary, brings these issues to the attention of the full Student Senate.  This Senator must also inform the Student Senate of all events and programs being put on by the Campus Activities Board.

 

Interdisciplinary Studies Senator

 

The Interdisciplinary Studies Senator is responsible for making sure that the Interdisciplinary Studies students are involved in and informed about Student Senate meetings and other events of the Student Government.  This Senator also assists these students in concerns pertaining to them and, when necessary, brings these issues to the attention of the full Student Senate.  This Senator must also inform the Student Senate of all events and programs put on by the Interdisciplinary Studies students and department.

  

Liberal Arts Senator

 

The Liberal Arts Senator is responsible for making sure that the Liberal Arts department and students are involved in and informed about Student Senate meetings and other events of the Student Government.  This Senator also assists the Liberal Arts students with all concerns pertaining to them and, when necessary, brings these issues to the attention of the full Student Senate.  This Senator must also inform the Student Senate of all events and programs put on by the Liberal Arts students and department.

 

Media Senator

 

The Media Senator is responsible for all the media organizations at the Brighton Campus.  This Senator assists these organizations in concerns pertaining to them and, when necessary, brings these issues to the attention of the full Student Senate.  This Senator must also inform the Student Senate of all events and programs being put on by the media organizations at the Brighton Campus.

 

Residence Hall Senator

 

The Residence Hall Senator is responsible for the students living on campus.  This Senator assists Residence Hall students with concerns pertaining to them and, when necessary, brings these issues to the attention of the full Student Senate.  This Senator must also inform the Student Senate of all events and programs being put on at the Residence Halls or by the Residence Hall students.

 

Service Clubs Senator

 

The Service Clubs Senator must attend Roundtable meetings and is responsible for the various service clubs chartered on campus.  This Senator assists these clubs in matters pertaining to them and, when necessary, brings these issues to the attention of the full Student Senate.  This Senator must also inform the Student Senate of all events and programs being put on by the service clubs.

 

Social Clubs Senator

 

The Social Clubs Senator must attend Roundtable meetings and is responsible for the various social clubs chartered on campus.  This Senator assists these clubs in matters pertaining to them and, when necessary, brings these issues to the attention of the full Student Senate.  This Senator must also inform the Student Senate of all events and programs being put on by the social clubs.

 

Technical Education Senator

 

The Technical Education Senator is responsible for making sure that the Workforce Development Division is involved in and informed about Student Senate meetings and other events of the Student Government.  This Senator also assists these students in all concerns pertaining to them and, when necessary, brings these issues to the attention of the full Student Senate. This Senator must also inform the Student Senate of all events and programs put on by the Technical Education students and departments.
